The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria-DICON has signed a joint venture partnership agreement with an indigenous company-SP Offshore Nigeria limited.

The signing of the agreement is aimed at boosting Nigeria’s capacity in arms and weapons production, which is held at the DICON headquarters in Kaduna.

Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, the Director-General of DICON, Major General Babatunde Alaya described the partnership as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to becoming self sufficient in arms and weapons production.

He pointed out that the agreement would pave the way for the establishment of an ammunition production line within the next one year, and thereafter, produce weapons.

“We are also going to have a jetty in Lagos where we are going to be producing security equipment, fast assault boats, border security equipment and so on”

Major General Babatunde Alaya also disclosed that the partnership is expected to attract billions of dollars from foreign investors to support the joint venture.

The DG commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the DICON act 2023 into law, which enabled the joint venture agreement, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly, Ministers of Defence, the CDS and Service Chiefs for their continuous support to the DICON.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of SP Offshore Nigeria limited, Mr Obafemi Adekunle explained that the focus on defence technology and self sufficiency in arms production was crucial for national security.

He noted that the partnership would provide security agencies with capabilities that would deter adversaries and enhance national security.

The signing of the MOU is in line with DICON’s resolve to drive self sufficiency in arms production through collaborations and partnerships with indigenous and foreign companies.

It is also expected to drive growth and development in Nigeria’s defence industry with excess capacity for export.
