President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, the President stated that the decision was necessitated by months of persistent political crisis in the state, which has hindered governance and deprived the people of Rivers State of the dividends of democracy.

The President expressed deep concern over the “grave situation” in the state, which he said had worsened following the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex by the governor on December 13, 2023. According to him, despite interventions from well-meaning Nigerians and several peace efforts, the crisis has defied resolution.

Referring to a February 28, 2025, Supreme Court ruling that indicted the governor for unconstitutional acts and disregard for the rule of law, the President stated, “There is no government in Rivers State as the executive arm has collapsed the legislature and is ruling like a despot.”

The President also disclosed receiving security reports indicating fresh threats to national assets, including the vandalization of pipelines by militants allegedly loyal to the governor, with no action taken to stop them.

The President appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to oversee the affairs of Rivers State. He clarified that the judicial arm of the state will continue to function normally and that the Administrator will only be permitted to formulate necessary regulations subject to Federal Executive Council approval.

The President expressed hope that this intervention will compel all parties in Rivers State to abide by constitutional governance and restore normalcy.
