Federal Government has awarded N289 million as compensation to 74 victims of human rights violations and alleged extra-judicial killings by the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS).

At the event in Abuja, the Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission Tony Ojukwu explained that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was committed to ensuring that victims of human rights violation are appropriately compensated while the violators are prosecuted for the heinous crimes.

Those compensated include; victims of unlawful detention and torture, victims of illegal arrest, victims of enforce disappearance and extra-judicial killings.

The beneficiaries were given amounts ranging from N500,000 to N17 million depending on the petition of the beneficiaries.
