Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa Rtd has announced plans by the Federal Government to increase salaries for Personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The minister made this known in Abuja during a one-day training and financial empowerment workshop organised for widows and wives of military personnel. He said the planned salary review is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of troops and rewarding their sacrifices in defending the nation.
The Defence Minister recalled that military salaries were increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, adding that efforts are underway to secure an even better remuneration package for service personnel.
According to him, the welfare of soldiers remains a top priority, expressing confidence that President Tinubu will soon announce another upward review in their salaries.
General Musa also reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to promoting policies and strategic partnerships that support the overall well-being of members of the Armed Forces and their families.
Speaking on the theme, “Renewed Hope for Families of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development,” the Minister stressed that a strong and effective military depends not only on modern equipment and professional training but also on economically stable families.
He commended military spouses for their resilience and unwavering support, noting that their sacrifices help sustain the morale of personnel serving on the frontlines. He also paid tribute to widows of fallen soldiers, describing their courage and perseverance as a source of inspiration.
A statement by special Assistant to the Minister says the workshop was organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) to enhance the entrepreneurial capacity of military families.
In his remarks, the Director-General of SMEDAN, Mr. Charles Odii, announced the disbursement of ₦25 million to 500 widows and wives of soldiers currently serving in conflict areas to strengthen their small businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Odii explained that the empowerment programme would be extended across the country, providing beneficiaries with financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills and greater access to financial inclusion opportunities.
The event was attended by the wife of the Minister of Defence, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, senior officials of the Ministry, SMEDAN development partners and other stakeholders.
