Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through the provision of resources, advanced capabilities and an enabling environment to enhance maritime security and support the nation’s blue economy.
The Minister stated this in Lagos while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night, the grand finale of activities marking seven decades of service by the Nigerian Navy.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media Mrs Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Musa said the Federal Government remains focused on building a technologically advanced, interconnected and globally respected naval force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests and contributing to regional security.
He stressed the need for the Navy to embrace innovation and emerging technologies, noting that contemporary security challenges require advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defence tools and data-driven operational platforms.
According to the Minister, a technology-driven Navy will strengthen maritime domain awareness, improve operational effectiveness and enhance collective security efforts within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.
General Musa described the Nigerian Navy as a model of professionalism, discipline and resilience, congratulating the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings and civilian personnel for their achievements over the past seventy years.
He also acknowledged the support of Nigeria’s international partners, commending their continued cooperation and shared commitment to promoting maritime security and stability.
Highlighting the Navy’s contributions to national development, the Minister said its operations have played a critical role in protecting strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure and other vital maritime assets, thereby supporting economic growth and the development of the nation’s blue economy.
He noted that the Service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes that threaten national prosperity.
The Minister further observed that beyond maritime operations, the Navy has continued to support internal security efforts and collaborate with other security agencies in maintaining peace and stability across the country.
General Musa said the Navy’s contributions have enhanced Nigeria’s sovereignty, boosted investor confidence, facilitated trade and positioned the country to harness the vast opportunities within its maritime sector.
He also congratulated officers who received awards and special recognition during the event, including personnel honoured posthumously for their dedication and sacrifice in service to the nation.
The Minister described the Ceremonial Sunset as a cherished naval tradition that symbolises duty, honour, discipline and the continuity of service, noting that the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on the Nigerian Navy’s seventy years of professionalism and commitment to defending the nation’s maritime domain.
