The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Waidi Shaibu says modern warfare had become increasingly complex and technology-driven, necessitating the Army to evolve beyond traditional manoeuvre concepts.
He stated this at the closing ceremony of the Combat Arms Training Week-CATWEEK 2026 held at the Jaji Military Cantonment in Kaduna State.

Lt General Waidi Shaibu stressed the need for the full integration of drone warfare and combat aviation into the operational and training architecture to enhance combat effectiveness.
He pointed out that combat aviation and unmanned aerial systems had become indispensable enablers in modern warfare.
The Army Chief said the establishment and growth of Army Aviation capability would significantly enhance operational flexibility, responsiveness and combat depth.
Lt General Waidi Shaibu reiterated the need for realistic, mission-oriented and forward-looking training while investing in personnel development,doctrinal refinement and innovation.
He expressed delight over the conduct of a combined Infantry and Armoured manoeuvre exercise in a simulated comba environment during the CATWEEK, describing it as a reflection of Army’s commitment to realistic training.
The Army Chief also assured Nigerian Army’s continuos joint operations with sister services to strengthen inter-agency collaboration in addressing emerging security threats.
Earlier, the Commander Infantry Corps, Major General Godwin Mutkut noted that the training week provided a vital platform for professional engagement, doctrinal review and operational reflection among participants.
He maintained that discussions during the event highlighted the need for the Army to continually adapt to evolving operational realities through innovation, combat readiness and integrated force application.
Major General Mutkut added that a well-trained, motivated and equipped force remain capable of overcoming operational challenges and achieving mission success.
Highpoint of the event was combined arms and firepower demonstrations.
