President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football aimed at addressing the recurring failure of the country’s national teams to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.
The President said the reform should strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, player development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability in the football sector.
He noted that despite progress recorded in other sports since the re-establishment of the National Sports Commission, football continues to face structural challenges.
President Tinubu therefore directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in football administration while facilitating a broad and consultative reform process.
The President also directed that the reform process should involve appropriate consultations with FIFA and CAF, while ensuring that Nigeria continues to meet its obligations under the international football framework.
