Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commemorated the 2026 International Civil Defence Day (ICDD), reaffirmed commitment to protecting lives and property while strengthening environmental risk management for a safer and more sustainable future.
Speaking at the event in Gusau with the themed “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future ” the State Commandant, Sani Mustapha, described the day as a moment for reflection, recommitment, and improvement in civil defence obligations worldwide.
According to him, International Civil Defence Day provides an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the mandate of civil defence agencies, as enshrined by the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), to safeguard the civil populace, enhance preparedness, and promote effective emergency management and public awareness.

SANI Mustapha emphasized that, the NSCDC remains a critical component of Nigeria’s national security architecture, with responsibilities spanning the prevention and response to both man-made and natural disasters.
He noted that, under the leadership of the Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Corps has adopted strategic preventive measures aimed at identifying, analysing, and assessing risks, while coordinating timely responses to ensure public safety.
He explained that the 2026 ICDD theme reflects the Commandant General’s resolve to realign the Corps’ operations with contemporary challenges in crisis management and environmental protection, particularly in the face of climate change and environmental degradation.
The Commandant further stressed the importance of public sensitisation on environmental protection, noting that effective risk management begins with awareness and collective responsibility.
He highlighted key focus areas adopted by the command, including environmental risk analysis, conservation, pollution and waste management, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development practices.

Sani Mustapha also disclosed that the Zamfara State Command, in collaboration with the Zamfara Environmental Protection and Enforcement Agency (ZEPEA), has proactively implemented several initiatives.
These include preparedness for climate impacts through adaptation planning, protection of natural ecosystems against erosion and flooding, waste and pollution reduction strategies, promotion of renewable energy alternatives, and the deployment of green infrastructure such as tree planting to mitigate storms and reduce environmental pollution.
He assured that these strategies are being implemented, monitored, and enforced to guarantee sustainable development and ensure compliance among residents.
In a statement signed by the Command Public Relations Officer, ASCI Umar Mohammad M., on behalf of the State Commandant said that the event, with the themed “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future brought together stakeholders.
