Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral Development, in collaboration with the Zamfara State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), has convened a stakeholders’ meeting with quarry operators, mineral processors, and gold dealers to promote safety, environmental protection, and strict compliance with mining regulations in Zamfara State.

The Federal Mines Officer in Zamfara State, Mr. Samuel Abunumah, disclosed this while addressing participants at the meeting held in Gusau.

He said the engagement was aimed at sensitising operators on the need to carry out mining activities strictly in line with approved licences and established environmental standards, particularly in host communities where mining activities have the greatest impact.

According to him, only operators with valid licences and approved quarterly operational releases are authorised to operate, noting that such approvals come with clear obligations.

Mr. Samuel Abunumah, who is also Secretary Zamfara State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee MIREMCO cationed operators who use explosives to exercise extreme care in the handling, transportation, and storage of such materials, warning that negligence could lead to diversion into illegal or criminal use, thereby posing serious security risks to communities and the state.

According to him, both the federal and Zamfara State governments are determined to promote responsible mining practices that enhance security, safeguard the environment, and ensure that solid mineral resources contribute meaningfully to economic development.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Environment, Mining and Solid Minerals, Kasimu Sani Kaura, represented by the Director of Solid Minerals, Sanusi Maharazu Badarawa. expressed deep concern over the reported mishandling of explosive devices.

He noted that the state government views the issue as a serious security matter that require urgent and coordinated intervention.

Ealier, the Coordinator of the Zamfara State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee, Abdullahi A. Danbaba said the committee is making deliberate efforts to bring together all stakeholders to ensure safer and more responsible mining operations across the state.

He explained that, the committee has consistently engaged host communities and mining companies to address safety, environmental, and health concerns arising from mining activities.

According to him, some operations pose risks to air quality, water sources, and general public health if not properly managed.

Mr. Abdullahi Danbaba noted that while the committee continues to encourage compliance, there are instances where some companies fail to fully adhere to safety and environmental standards, stressing that such lapses could endanger nearby communities.

He emphasised that the committee’s goal is to create an environment where mining activities can be carried out responsibly, allowing both operators and communities to coexist peacefully and safely.

Abdullahi Danbaba who is Mines Environmental Compliance Officer announced plans to intensify monitoring and inspection of quarry sites, mineral processing facilities, and gold trading locations across the state to ensure compliance.

During the meeting, stakeholders were equally urged to support host communities through meaningful development projects while ensuring that mining activities do not degrade the environment or endanger public health.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to fully compy with the rules and regulation for the overall development of the country.

The meeting brought together mining stakeholders from various field.
