The Director, Distance Learning at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Professor Muhammad Bashir Mu’azu, has emphasized the need for responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering education, research, and professional practice.
He stated this In a keynote lecture delivered, at the February General Meeting and Launch of the Branch Calendar of the Nigerian Society of Engineers-NSE Zaria Branch, held at NAERLS Ahmadu Bello University Samaru, Zaria.

Professor Muhammad Bashir Mu’azu said that students increasingly rely on AI for academic tasks, warning that over-dependence could produce graduates lacking real technical competence.
The Director also described AI as a powerful support tool in solving complex calculations, system design, technical documentation, and workflow efficiency, while stressing that technology should assist expertise, not replace it.
He urged educators and students to use AI responsibly, ensuring verification of results, and maintaining professional standards.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the Zaria Branch of the NSE, Engr. Maryam Abubakar, said the meeting was aimed at boosting membership drive, fostering cooperation, as well as restoring the branch’s legacy as one of the best in the country.
She encouraged members to attend meetings regularly, share knowledge, mentor young engineers, and engage in community service.
In their separate remarks, Engr. Osaze Omorubo and Engr. Agba urged members to view the society as a collective responsibility, participate actively, and ensure its sustainability.

The event also celebrated newly inducted Fellows, honored past Chairmen,Elders, and recognized outstanding contributions through awards ceremony.
