The Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, has called on leaders at all levels to uphold and build upon the enduring legacy of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the former Northern Nigeria.

Alhaji Kankara made the call while speaking as a royal father at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, to mark 60 years since the assassination of the late premier during the January 1966 military coup in Kaduna.

He said Sir Ahmadu Bello’s name continues to feature prominently in historical and contemporary discussions on democratic leadership, governance and public service, even six decades after his death.

According to him, the visionary leadership and foresight of the Sardauna laid a solid foundation for socio-economic development in Northern Nigeria.

He noted that the establishment of key institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, alongside major infrastructure projects across the region, remains a lasting testament to his leadership.

Alhaji Kankara, who disclosed that he is an alumnus of ABU, having graduated in 1981, commended the NUJ Katsina State Council for sustaining the annual memorial lecture and urged the union to continue organising the event to keep the ideals of the late premier alive.

Delivering the memorial lecture, a Bayero University Kano lecturer, Dr Bala Abdullahi Mohamed, said Sir Ahmadu Bello successfully fostered unity among the diverse ethnic groups in the former Northern Region and implemented development-oriented policies and programmes that transformed the region.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of an award of honour to Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, who is also the Patron of the NUJ Katsina State Council, in recognition of his consistent support for the union’s activities.

Dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe, who delivered a keynote address, describing the virtues of the late Sardauna as worthy of emulation by present and future leaders.

In a related development, the Kanwan Katsina congratulated the NUJ Chairman, Katsina State Council, Comrade Tukur Hassan Ali, on his promotion to the rank of Permanent Secretary in the Katsina State Civil Service.

He described the promotion as well-deserved and urged him to work diligently for the development of the state, while wishing him divine guidance in his new role.
