National and State Assemblies have been urged to declare the seats of lawmakers who defect to other political parties, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.

A Kaduna-based legal practitioner, Barrister El-Zubairu Abubakar, gave the advice in an interview with journalists in Kaduna.

He was reacting to reports that a court had directed a member of the House of Representatives to vacate his seat after defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Barrister Abubakar described the judgment as necessary to uphold democratic principles and protect voters’ mandate.

He blamed the various assemblies for breaching the constitutional provision for ulterior motives which should no longer be tolerated.

Barrister El-Zubair Abubakar also commented on attempt to stop the PDP National Convention through legal process and reminded politicians of the need to follow due process in the conduct of parties administration to check impunity by some powerful members which may derail the current democracy.
