United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF has pledged continued support to Jigawa State in recognition of the Namadi administration’s commitment to improving the lives of women and children.

UNICEF Country Representative, Mrs. Wafaa Saeed, made this known during the handing over of climate-resilient infrastructure for basic services to the Jigawa State Government at Chamo community, Dutse, the state capital.

Mrs Wafaa Saeed, pointed out that UNICEF in collaboration with the FCDO and other partners, including the Kano and Jigawa state governments, developed an innovative project, the Climate Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services (CRIBS) Health and Education.

She commended Governor Umar Namadi for sustaining the campaign against Open Defecation by providing enough public toilets for the citizens.

Mrs Wafaa Saeed said that, the commitment of UNICEF, in helping Jigawa State to reduce the number of out-of-school children, noting that the efforts of the administration on education, revealed that the problem would become history.

Also speaking, the Director Development of the FCDO, Mrs Cynthia Rowe, said Nigeria is vulnerable to a variety of climate hazards.

According to her, Nigeria ranks second amongst countries where children face the highest climate-related risks, directly threatening their ability to survive, grow, learn and fulfil their potentials.

In his speech, Governor Umar Namadi commended the development partners thus describing their intervention as “innovative strategies to tackle Climate Change,”

Namadi said, Jigawa is amongst the state’s with a high risk of natural disasters such as flooding, drought that affects schools and health facilities.

He pledged to continue to support the development partners to improve the well-being of children, women and the state at large.

Radio Nigeria reports that, UNICEF in collaboration with Foreign Common wealth Development Office of the UK government FCDO handed over climate resilient Infrastructures for Basic Services to Jigawa state government, to mitigate climate change in the area.

The structures handed to the Jigawa state government were primary healthcare centres and primary schools, located at Chamo community in the outskirt of Dutse.
