Federal and state governments have been urged to create ministries of family affairs to check crime and moral decadence in the country which have been blamed on the collapse of family values.
The Imam at Kofar Marusa Juma’at Mosque in Katsina, Sheikh Nura Gwanda, made the call in his Friday sermon with the theme ‘Parenting as a Sacred Trust ‘.
He listed social ills that include drug and substance abuse, thuggery, armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping, and corruption in government and the private sector as fallouts of the collapse of family values in the country.
Sheik Gwanda explained that most countries in the Middle East and Europe have Ministries of Family Affairs that take care of issues around marriage, child upbringing, inheritance, domestic violence, child abuse, divorce, child custody and other family matters.
He argued that with the family being the building block of the society, creating such a ministry in Nigeria will go along way in addressing issues such as child abuse, child destitution, lack of moral training, and the widespread children abandonment in the northern part of the country.
The imam maintained that creating a Ministry of Family Affairs will also eliminate the root causes of insecurity in the country, as the key actors are mostly abandoned children and those from broken homes.
