National Assembly has been urged to ensure fairness and equity by giving equal attention to all six geopolitical zones in the ongoing process for proposed state creation.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Umaru Dembo, made the appeal while reacting to the zonal public hearings conducted by the Constitution Review Committee, which received multiple requests for the creation of new states across the country.
Alhaji Umaru Dembo suggested the use of population and land mass as key criteria for the exercise, in order to avoid unnecessary controversies and allegations of marginalization by some stakeholders with ulterior motives.
According to him, each zone should have three additional states as against plan to create more states in the southern part of the country which has small population and land mass to enjoy better political advantage.
Alhaji Umaru Dembo also a former minister of state for petroleum resources warned against attempt to sideline the northern geopolitical zone in the states creation considering constitutional hurdles to be faced in the exercise and called for maturity, fear of God and patriotism to achieve desired objectives.
