Federal Government has expressed readiness to partner with the Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT) in the areas of research, vaccine production, drug development, and the fight against tropical diseases.

Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the KIRCT headquarters in Kano.

Professor Mustapha said the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between NBRDA and KIRCT to address national challenges through advanced research.

 

“As a key agency responsible for biotechnology research and development across priority sectors such as food and agriculture, health, industry, and the environment we are committed to providing all necessary support to KIRCT in achieving its objectives,”

He commended the state-of-the-art facilities at the Centre, noting that they hold immense potential to deliver impactful results and elevate Nigeria’s standing in global research.

In his remarks, the Director General of KIRCT, Professor Hamisu Salihu, explained that the Centre focuses on three core areas:

A.   Supporting top researchers from Bayero University Kano and Northwest University.

 

B.    Training the next generation of research scientists.

C.      Launching a pilot programme to train five of the best final-year secondary school students in biotechnology before they proceed to university.

Professor Hamisu emphasized the importance of the media and the Kano State Ministry of Health in shaping the future of biotechnology and fostering a knowledge-driven economy.

He reiterated KIRCT’s commitment to sustaining momentum in high-impact research.

Radio Nigeria reports that the Kano Independent Research Centre Trust was established to conduct biomedical and healthcare research on communicable and non-communicable diseases of public health significance in Nigeria and across Africa.
