Farmers in Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State have commended Governor Umar Namadi for introducing a fertilizer subsidy to ease the burden of rising agricultural input costs.

This comes amid growing concerns over the high cost of fertilizer nationwide, which had forced many farmers to abandon rice and maize farming this season.

Responding to the crisis, Governor Namadi approved a 45–50% subsidy on fertilizer, with trucks already distributing the product across the 27 local government areas of the state.

Kirikasamma received 1,200 bags of subsidized NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer, to be sold at ₦28,800 per bag, far below the market price of ₦50,000 to ₦56,000.

The Head of Agriculture and Natural Resources Department, Alhaji Sabi’u Kani, confirmed the delivery and pricing during the flag-off.

Speaking during the event, the Council Chairman, Muhammad Maji Wakili Marma, said the governor’s intervention was timely and aimed at boosting food security while easing farmers’ hardship.

He explained that ward-level committees, led by councilors and community representatives, would oversee the distribution.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kabila Suga, praised both the governor and council chairman for the initiative, saying it would help smallholder farmers maximize their harvests and profits in the coming season.
