The Kano State Government says it has put in place necessary modalities for the timely implementation of its climate change action plan, including the release of a costed implementation framework aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, during a Technical Review of the draft Climate Change Policy CCP Implementation Action Plan with members of the Technical Committee TWG.

Represented by the Director of Climate Change at the Ministry, Umar Saleh Anka explained that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has made significant budgetary allocations for climate change initiatives in the state’s 2025 budget.

He explained that, with the validation and subsequent passage of this policy, Kano will operate a unified budget approach, that will enhance its climate change ranking.

The Commissioner emphasized that the policy will also serve as a gateway for non-state actors and development partners to implement climate-related projects in the state.

“ This framework is crucial to protecting livelihoods, strengthening the economy, and addressing challenges such as flooding.”

Speaking during the engagement, the Team Lead of the Partnership for Agile Governance and climate engagement PACE, FCDO, Malam Auwalu Hamza stressed the importance of involving relevant stakeholders to carefully review and refine the draft policy.

He described climate change as a global concern requiring urgent attention at all levels of government.

“Our support is to ensure that Kano State, through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, fulfills its commitment to developing a comprehensive and actionable climate policy.”

Also speaking, Professor Murtala Muhammad Badamasi of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture CDA, Bayero University Kano (BUK), who doubles as special adviser to the commissioner of environment described the policy as a critical guiding document.

“The draft is a product of collaborative efforts, with participants drawn from various sectors. This collective input will help ensure the final policy document is robust and ready for enactment by the government.”

The engagement marks a significant milestone in Kano State’s journey toward climate resilience and sustainable environmental governance.

Radio Nigeria reports that, the technical review session was organized by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change MoECC with support from FCDO PACE.
