Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reviving the Maigatari Free Trade Zone, describing it as a key driver of economic growth, trade, and industrialization in the state.
He made the statement during a meeting with the Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Controller Dalhat Abubakar, who paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Dutse.
Governor Namadi congratulated Controller Abubakar on his appointment and commended the Customs Service for showing renewed interest in Jigawa’s development goals, particularly the revival of the long-dormant Maigatari project.
He expressed appreciation for the Controller’s technical support and acknowledged reports of his proactive engagement with the state’s economic team on the project.
Governor Namadi traced the history of the Maigatari Free Trade Zone, noting that although it was established over 25 years ago, it remained inactive for many years.
He said his government has taken significant steps to bring it back to life.
According to him, statutory licenses have been paid, rural resettlement has been carried out, and discussions are ongoing with potential investors to operationalize the zone.
He emphasized the importance of partnership with federal institutions like the Nigeria Customs Service to achieve full activation of the free trade zone.
In response, Controller Abubakar assured that the Customs Service is ready to begin operations at Maigatari immediately, highlighting that the remaining issues are mostly administrative and technical, and can be easily resolved.
He praised the dedication of Jigawa’s economic team, describing them as capable and fully committed to the Governor’s vision for Maigatari.
Controller Abubakar also stressed the unique advantage of the Maigatari Free Trade Zone, pointing out that its location near the border gives it a competitive edge over other zones, even in large commercial centers like Kano.
He called for continued collaboration between stakeholders to overcome remaining challenges and unlock the zone’s full potential.
Governor Namadi finally assured that the state government is ready to act on advice and support necessary to ensure Maigatari becomes fully operational and impactful.
