Northern state governors have been advised to demonstrate strong commitment to the development of the agricultural sector in order to achieve food security in the region.
A former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Senator Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa, gave the advice during an interview in Kaduna.
Senator Mas’ud El Jibril was concerned over persistent complaints of farmers about high cost of inputs particularly fertilizer sold at eighty thousand Naira per bag while selling crops at lower prices.
He expressed delight over recent steps taken by the Gombe State Government by providing the commodity at affordable prices which should be emulated by other state governments to achieve desired objectives.
Senator Mas’ud El Jibril also suggested establishment of large farm centres by the governors as part of measures for youth employment expected to check insecurity as witnessed during the first republic.
