The Zamfara State Government has concluded the payment of over 13 billion naira outstanding gratuities, marking a significant step towards improving the welfare of retired civil servants in the state.

The State Deputy Governor, Mani Malam Mummuni, disclosed this during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the state capital.

According to Mummuni, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal remains committed to addressing the challenges facing workers and retirees in the state.

He explained that, the state government is aware of the cases of workers who were mistakenly removed from the payroll following the just-concluded staff verification exercise.

“The government has already set up a committee under the leadership of the Head of Civil Service to resolve the issue. We are confident this will be concluded soon.”

The deputy governor also highlighted that, in recognition of the vital role of workers, the Lawal led administration had taken bold steps to improve their welfare and working conditions.

“As part of these efforts, we have commenced implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage for civil servants. This move demonstrates our genuine commitment to supporting workers amid prevailing economic challenges,”

Mummuni further explained that beyond salaries, the administration has paid special attention to the plight of retirees men and women who dedicated decades to the service of the state.

He also responded to workers’ demands regarding promotions, explaining that the issue of implementation of promotion benefits, especially for those with two or more promotion without corresponding salary adjustments, is being addressed.

“On this special day, I salute the resilience and dedication of Zamfara workers. I commend your courage and commitment. May God bless you all,” he concluded.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Zamfara State Council, Comrade Saidu Mudi, appealed to the government to address lingering challenges faced by workers.

These include full implementation of the new minimum wage, release of the approved salary structure, upward review of pensions, and reinstatement of workers erroneously removed from the payroll.

Comrade Mudi, however, commended the state government for achievements such as prompt payment of salaries and pensions, and the payment of 30% of basic salary to civil servants across the local government areas as a 13th month bonus.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Zamfara State, Comrade Sani Halliru, emphasized the importance of Workers’ Day in recognizing the struggles of workers and trade unions for better working conditions.

He lamented that the state’s monthly pension had not been reviewed in the last 27 years, contrary to the Pension Act which stipulates a review every five years.

“Your Excellency, considering the fact that Zamfara workers are not on any viable pension scheme, we urge the government to urgently adopt a sustainable and suitable pension plan.”

While acknowledging the government’s efforts in combating insecurity, he urged authorities not to relent, as insecurity remains a major threat in the state.

He wished fellow workers a happy celebration and encouraged them to remain dedicated and punctual in their duties to support the development of Zamfara State.
