The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has expressed appreciation to Governor Dauda Lawal for his cooperation in addressing the tragic accidental airstrike that occurred on January 11, 2025, in Zamfara State.
During a visit to the Government House in Gusau, Air Marshal Abubakar extended his condolences to the Zamfara State Government over the incident, which resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians in Dangebe community near Gidan Makera, Maradun Local Government Area.
He commended the state government for its handling of the situation and emphasized the need for continued collaboration to enhance security in the region.
Stressing the airstrike as deeply regrettable, he assured that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is taking necessary measures to prevent recurrence.
“On January 11, 2025, airstrikes were conducted in Zamfara based on intelligence reports of bandit activity in Gidan Makera, Maradun LGA. The operation targeted terrorists linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. However, a few days later, reports emerged that the strike had mistakenly hit members of a local vigilante group,” he explained.
“Deeply concerned by this development, I immediately set up a fact-finding committee for a thorough investigation. The committee has since confirmed that 11 members of the vigilante group were unintentionally killed.”
Air Marshal Abubakar reiterated the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to supporting the victims and their families.
“Our visit today is to express our heartfelt sympathy to you, the families of the victims, and the people of Zamfara over this unfortunate incident,” he said.
The Air Chief announced that the Nigerian Air Force had provided financial assistance, pledged to rebuild destroyed buildings, and committed to replacing two lost motorcycles.
Responding, Governor Lawal appealed to the Nigerian Air Force to establish a permanent base or an Air Force hangar in Zamfara once the Gusau International Airport is completed.
He emphasized the importance of a stronger military presence to combat insecurity and assured the Air Chief of his administration’s unwavering support for security agencies in the fight against insurgency and banditry.
“I sincerely appreciate the Chief of Air Staff, even before today’s visit, he sent a high-ranking delegation to condole with us and the people of Zamfara on two separate occasions,” Governor Lawal noted.
“When the incident occurred, we immediately clarified to the media that it was an unfortunate accident, not an intentional act, the presence of the Air Chief in Zamfara today reflects outstanding professionalism and concern.”
The governor also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its crucial role in combating banditry, not just in Zamfara but across the Northwest and the entire country.
“I appreciate the prompt response of the Air Force whenever we reach out for support. I also want to inform the Air Marshal that we are currently constructing an airport in Zamfara, and I appeal for an Air Force hangar upon its completion to ensure swift military operations in the state.”
Governor Lawal further acknowledged the Nigerian Air Force’s efforts in assisting victims and strengthening security operations in the region.
Following the meeting, the governor and the Air Chief held a private session with the families of the airstrike victims, including 11 others who were injured.
