The Chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON), Kebbi State Chapter, Muhammad Dahiru Nayaya Ambursa, has affirmed that, six local government councils in the state would not afford to pay salaries if autonomy is fully implemented.

Speaking to newsmen, Dahiru Nayaya, who is also the Chairman of Birnin Kebbi Local Government, stated that, this could be as a result of limited financial capacity and over staff strange in the affected local governments.

 

He stated that, the state government, has no issues with local government autonomy due to the Governor’s commitment to protecting their rights and privileges.

The ALGON Chairman, emphsised that, local governments autonomy must be implemented with sensitivity saying, during a recent meeting of local government chairmen in Katsina, it was revealed that several councils in Katsina and Kebbi states will face similar issues with salary payments under autonomy.

 

The Chairman revealed that,  Governor Idris, has approved the acquisition of a 100 hectres of land for the new Birnin Kebbi town cementary and payment of compensation amounting to over 144 million naira to the land owners has commenced.
