Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has ordered military officers whose ranks supersedes that of the newly appointed Service Chiefs to voluntarily retire on or before July 3 2023.

The directive was contained in a memo signed by Major General Y. Yahaya on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff.

According to the memo, the directive was aimed at upholding the principles of hierarchy in the Military as senior officers cannot take directive from their subordinates in the profession.

With the appointment of the new Service Chiefs, the compulsory retirement of the senior officers now becomes more imperative since by principle they cannot be ordered around by their subordinates.

It therefore directed all officers above that of NDA Regular Course 39 to submit their applications for voluntary retirement from Service with immediate effect.
