The Accident and investigation Bureau (AIB), now Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has expanded its scope of operations to include road, rail and marine accidents.

Commissioner of the Bureau, Mr Akin Olateru, while presenting seven Accident reports in Abuja, said that the bureau was now enabled to investigate not only air crashes but those those that occurred on rail tracks, roads and waters with the aim of saving lives and improving safety.

He said the agency was working on a five year plan for an wholistic upgrade of its service with moves to refine collaborations with the railway and maritime organisations to reinforce its workforce.

Mr Akin Olateru said the agency also now had the sole responsibility of investigating accidents in the country with clear cut roles distinguishing it from regulators and service providers in the transport sector.

The released Accident reports published on the NSIB website also includes the British Aerospace aircraft incident that occurred at the Port Harcourt international airport in 2020 and has 20 safety recommendations.

“The 7 incident final reports includes 20 safety recommendations which were addressed to the Nigeria Civil Aviation authority, the affected airlines, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria. The newly reports make a total of 82 aircraft accident reports released by the Bureau since its establishment in 2007 and a total of 63 reports released by the current administration from 2017 till date. This year alone, seven reports and thirty safety recommendations have been released”
