Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) have suspended their strike actions.

The decision was taken after a brief meeting with the Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu in Abuja.

The Federal Government, according to the Education Minister, committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances to members of SSANU, NASU, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The suspension follows the conclusion of negotiations between the two unions and the federal government team led by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu according to the statement signed by the Joint Action Committee SSANU and NASU JAC’s spokesman, Comrade Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Ibrahim Mohammed.

According to the statement by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU, the bodies say the suspension is for an initial two months.

“The two months are to give the government the opportunity to implement the agreements reached with the two unions.”

The Minister of Education also gave an assurance that no member of the unions that participated in the strike will be victimized.

President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, had noted that salary backlogs must be cleared before lecturers return to the classroom.

However, activities in public universities are expected to remain limited as ASUU remains on strike.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14.
