The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has issued an apology for a tweet in which he shared images of himself attending a class at Harvard University.

Mr Gbajabiyamila uploaded the images on Tuesday to his social media handles along with the caption that it wasn’t too late to go to school.

However, the tweet caused an uproar among Nigerians, who criticised the lawmaker on the grounds that students in Nigerian public universities are not in class as a result of a strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a statement on his social media handles, the speaker stated that he did not intend for his tweet to cause “disaffection”.

“That post was not sensitive to the present feelings of fellow citizens, especially parents and students, who are presently bearing the brunt of the ongoing closure of public universities,” he wrote.

“I apologise for the post at this time, and I hope you will understand that it was not my intention to cause disaffection.”

Mr Gbajabiamila also stated that he has made multiple interventions in the nation’s education sector, and that the House of Representatives will endeavour to ensure that ASUU’s demands are fulfilled.
