President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that immediate action is required to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking at an iftar (fast-breaking) event organized by the diplomatic corps in Abuja on Thursday, Buhari stated that countries involved must consider the humanitarian impact, saying, “The war has lasted too long, cost too much, and hurt too many people.”

In a statement by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, the president stated that the rest of the world was feeling the effects of the conflict and that it would worsen if an immediate solution was not found, particularly in the area of food security.

President Buhari praised the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutterres for his recent visits to Moscow and Kyiv to promote a cease-fire. Guterres visited Moscow on 26 April with a “messenger of peace,” and said he had “frank discussions” with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Buhari also urged people all over the world, particularly Muslims, to use the month of Ramadan to continue to pray for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the restoration of global peace.

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized an invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces previously stationed along the border.

The invasion included attacks across the Belarus-Ukraine border, followed by targeted airstrikes on Ukrainian military facilities.

According to the United Nations, thousands of people have been killed, and many more have been displaced.
