NHRC Receives Over 260 Domestic Cases In Kano – Official

Kano state office of the National Human Rights Commission says, it has received over two hundred and sixty cases on family matters from January to march 2022.

The state coordinator the commission, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with correspondent Khadijah Aliyu in Kano.

According to him, the agency received a total of 52 complaints in January, 153 in February and 85 in March 2022.

The coordinator pointed out that, domestic violence,abandonment of family responsibility, rights of children and gender based violence constituted a high percentage of cases received.

Shehu Abdullahi attributed the rise on cases of family matters to economic challenges,where men intentionally or unintentionally neglect family responsibility.

“Generally you can understand that family matters has taken a large number of complaints we recieve , this is not showing well of how our family system is being governed”

Shehu Abdullahi explained the need for government to review policies that will address economic challenges to move the nation forward.

He maintained that, philanthropists and wealthy individuals have a vital role to play by assisting the less privileged in the society through empowerment and other programs aimed at alleviating poverty.

“Empowerment programs,monetary policies and other aspects of national development policies should be adopted in order to reduce the issue of economic crisis facing the nation”

The coordinator said, alternative dispute resolution has contributed immensely to logical conclusion of some cases received by the agency.

Radio Nigeria reports that the national human rights commission is saddled with the responsibilities of serving as an extra judicial mechanism for respect and enjoyment of human rights.
