The Zamfara State Council of Ulama has condemned the use of obscene language and inappropriate materials by some traditional medicine vendors to advertise their products in public places.
The Council Chairman, Sheikh Ahmad bin Umar Kanoma stated this while speaking to newsmen shortly after the Council’s 18th meeting held in Gusau the Zamfara State Capital.
Sheikh Ahmad Kanoma explained that, the sale of traditional medicines was not the concern, but the manner in which some vendors advertise their products, particularly through indecent language and loudspeakers in residential areas
He said traditional medicine vendors could be heard using obscene expressions to market their products in neighbourhoods and motor parks, while some also display inappropriate images, warning that, such practices could negatively affect the moral upbringing of children.
The Chairman said the Council would continue to support the Zamfara State Hisbah Board to take appropriate measures against vendors who use indecent language to advertise traditional medicines, particularly products used for treating male-related conditions and infections.
He also called on the Hisbah Board to intensify efforts to address the practice of medicine vendors moving around communities with loudspeakers while using offensive or immoral expressions to promote their products.
Sheikh Kanoma said the Council’s 18th meeting considered several important issues, including reports from its various committees, although some items on the agenda could not be fully discussed due to courtesy visits by guests.
He disclosed that the Council reviewed the activities of its committees and directed each committee to compile all projects and activities it had undertaken since its establishment.
According to him, the information will be consolidated into a comprehensive document to provide the public with a clear record of the Council’s activities and achievements across different areas.
He said the committee responsible for compiling the document had been directed to complete its assignment and present the report at the Council’s next meeting.
The Council Chairman also disclosed that, another committee was reviewing issues relating to the calculation of Zakat, including the consideration of silver as a basis for Zakat assessment instead of gold.
Sheikh Kanoma further said the Council received representatives of the Nurses and Midwives Association, who sought its intervention on some welfare and professional concerns from the state government
He recalled that when the Council learned that the association was planning to embark on industrial action several months ago, it mandated its Health and Education Committee to meet with the association.
Sheikh Kanoma said the intervention contributed to the decision by the association to suspend the planned strike, assuring that, the Council would continue discussions with the state government on the issues raised by the health workers.
The Council Chairman also called for continued prayers for victims of banditry and other forms of violence in Zamfara State.
He appealed to perpetrators of violence to abandon their activities, reminding them that they would ultimately return to their Creator and be held accountable for their actions.
