Federal Government team and ASUU members at negotiation table

Federal Government and Leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have failed to reach an agreement over the ongoing two-week warning strike embarked on by the union.

The meeting, which took place in Abuja on the 17th of March, was the second as the two parties seek to resolve issues raised by ASUU.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, said the Federal Government had tabled a new proposal regarding the impasse over the Integrated Payroll Personal Information System (IPPIS) enrolment for members of the union, as details of the proposal were not made public.

Dr Ngige said the issues under consideration ranged from funding, revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances to salaries shortfalls.

The Minister noted that ASUU were expected to go back and discuss issues raised with their members to enable the negotiating team report back to government before the weekend runs out.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi was of the view that they had improved on where they stopped in the previous meeting.

He described what they got from Government as concrete proposals.

ASUU declared the strike mainly to protest non-payment of salaries of their members who failed to enrol into the federal government’s IPPIS.
