The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano State Branch, has urged young doctors to develop their professional skills while carefully weighing the decision to migrate abroad in search of better opportunities.
The Chairman of the association, Dr Abubakar Nagoma Usman, made the call during the Young Doctors’ Day organised to mark the end of the Physicians Week activities.
Dr Usman said young doctors had a vital role to play in improving healthcare delivery across the country, urging them to contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s health system.
He acknowledged the challenges facing the health sector but said the association was working with relevant stakeholders to improve healthcare services.
The NMA chairman urged the government to improve the welfare and working conditions of medical practitioners to encourage young doctors to remain in the country rather than seek opportunities abroad.
He also assured young doctors that the association’s leadership would continue to provide mentorship, guidance and support to help them achieve their professional goals.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Physicians Week Committee, Dr Tijjani Garba Magashi, urged young doctors to remain patriotic and committed to their duties.
Dr Magashi prayed for divine reward for medical practitioners who dedicate themselves to saving lives and providing essential healthcare services to Nigerians.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of cash prizes of ₦200,000, ₦100,000 and ₦50,000 to the first-, second- and third-place winners, respectively, in an essay-writing competition.
The NMA leadership also announced the formation of a committee for young doctors to strengthen communication, coordination and support for the group.
