Otunba Segun Showunmi, National Convener of The Alternative Movement, has urged media practitioners to promote responsible political communication, combat misinformation and discourage divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Showunmi made the call in Kaduna while thanking journalists and residents of the state for their support during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign visit.
He commended the people of Kaduna for their turnout and peaceful conduct, describing the state as an important centre of political engagement and peaceful coexistence.
He urged journalists to hold politicians accountable, regardless of party affiliation, and challenge false information in the public interest.
Showunmi warned that the misuse of social media, artificial intelligence and other communication platforms to spread misinformation could undermine national unity and democratic stability.
He also cautioned against the exploitation of ethnic and religious differences for political gains, urging political leaders and media practitioners to protect Kaduna’s tradition of peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
On the 2027 general elections, Showunmi called for support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, arguing that political stability, continuity and planned leadership succession were important for Nigeria’s development.
He defended the administration’s reforms, citing road construction, student loan facilities, increased allocations to state and local governments, improved salary payments and efforts to tackle insecurity.
He also highlighted government interventions in healthcare, education and security, urging state and local governments to ensure that increased financial resources translate into better living conditions for residents.
Showunmi further called on political leaders to make development inclusive and ensure that citizens at the grassroots level have opportunities to participate in governance.
He urged journalists to uphold their role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm by providing accurate information, promoting accountability and safeguarding democracy.
He concluded by thanking the people of Kaduna and conveying Tinubu’s greetings to journalists and residents of the state.
