The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the mob killing of a woman accused of child theft in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, describing the act as barbaric and a serious violation of the rule of law.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mansir Hassan, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2026.
The police said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. that a woman was being attacked by an angry mob over allegations of child stealing, despite the absence of evidence to support the claim.
The statement explains that the DPO promptly led a team of officers to the scene, rescued the woman from the mob, and took her into protective custody at the police station pending investigation.
However, hundreds of angry residents reportedly later stormed and besieged the police station, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her, and subsequently set her body ablaze.
Police identified the victim as a native of Maraban Jos.
The Command described the incident as a criminal act and warned against jungle justice, stressing that no individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands.
“The Kaduna State Police Command strongly condemns the mob violence that resulted in the gruesome killing of the woman. This act is barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law,” the statement said.
The police disclosed that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved.
The Command further stated that a comprehensive investigation has commenced and assured that all those found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the Command would not tolerate mob action, jungle justice, or attacks on police personnel and facilities.
He urged members of the public to report suspicious persons and activities to security agencies and allow lawful procedures to take their course.
The Kaduna State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring justice for all citizens.
