Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Senator Ita Enang, has described a new book titled “The Nigerian Legislature: Understanding its Impact on Democratic Governance and National Development” as a landmark contribution to Nigeria’s democratic development.

The book, authored by Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, examines Nigeria’s parliamentary evolution, constitutional responsibilities and the role of the National Assembly in strengthening democracy.

According to Senator Enang, the publication provides an extensive analysis of legislative practices, including the budget process, legislative oversight and consideration of executive requests for domestic and external borrowing.

He said the book highlights how former Senate Presidents and Speakers of the House of Representatives discharged their constitutional responsibilities during the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth National Assemblies.

The publication also examines legislative scrutiny of executive nominations for ministerial, ambassadorial and other strategic appointments.

Senator Enang noted that the book explores the relationship between the legislature and the media, and seeks to deepen public understanding of parliamentary procedures and legislative decisions.

The book pays tribute to former Senate President Ahmed Lawan for his mentorship and contributions to strengthening democratic institutions.

It also discusses challenges facing the National Assembly, including institutional capacity gaps, ethical concerns, executive-legislative relations and judicial interventions.

The publication further assesses the impact of globalisation, digital technology and social media on legislative practice and public engagement.

Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, described the book as a valuable addition to literature on Nigeria’s legislature and recommended it to students and researchers.

Clerk to the National Assembly, Barrister Kamorudeen Ogunlana, expressed optimism that the book would help correct public misconceptions about the workings of the National Assembly.
