The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Zamfara State Command, wishes to address recent public narratives regarding conditions within custodial centres across the state, and to reassure the public that the welfare, health, safety, and dignity of all inmates remain a top priority of the Service.
This was made known in a statement by the Deputy Superintendent of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Zamfara State Command, Mustapha Abubakar.
The Command notes that, contrary to claims of neglect or inhumane treatment, inmates in custodial facilities under its supervision continue to receive adequate care in line with the operational standards, ongoing reforms, and guiding principles of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
It explains that, the Command operates structured welfare programmes that guarantee regular feeding, access to healthcare services, and the maintenance of hygienic and sanitary conditions within custodial centres.
“In collaboration with relevant government agencies, medical professionals, and humanitarian partners, the Service continues to provide inmates with routine medical check-ups, necessary medications, and prompt medical interventions where required. Regular environmental sanitation and hygiene exercises are also conducted to promote healthy living conditions across facilities”.

The Command further clarified that issues relating to awaiting-trial inmates are part of broader judicial and legal processes involving multiple institutions within the criminal justice system.
In this regard, the Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to working closely with the judiciary, legal aid organisations, and other key stakeholders to support the speedy dispensation of justice in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Zamfara State Command reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting the fundamental human rights of inmates, while sustaining security, rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration programmes aimed at preparing inmates for productive lives after custody.
Members of the public are therefore advised to rely on verified information and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims capable of creating unnecessary panic or misconceptions about the operations of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
