Kaduna State has reaffirmed its commitment to improving water access and advancing gender equality as it joined the global community to mark World Water Day 2026, with emphasis on this year’s theme, “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”

Delivering a press briefing on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, Alhaji Ashiru Abdu Na Abdu, the Deputy Director of Water Resources, Engr. David Roven Aliyu, highlighted the critical importance of water to human survival and sustainable development.

He noted that the annual observance, established by the United Nations, continues to draw global attention to water-related challenges.

Aliyu stressed that women and girls bear a disproportionate burden in accessing water, often spending long hours fetching it, time that could otherwise be used for education, economic activities, and personal development.

He emphasized that improving access to clean water is key to addressing inequality and unlocking opportunities for women.

He explained that the Kaduna State Government is implementing wide-ranging interventions to improve water supply, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

He said, these efforts are being coordinated through agencies such as the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC), Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, and the Kaduna State Water Services Regulatory Commission (KADWREC).

According to him, major achievements include the drilling of solar-powered and manual boreholes, expansion and rehabilitation of water distribution pipelines, and the upgrading of key water facilities.

He added that a high-lift water pump has been installed at the Malali Water Works to boost supply, while Kaduna North and South water treatment plants are undergoing upgrades to improve service delivery.

Aliyu also highlighted partnerships with development organizations such as UNICEF and UN Women, aimed at promoting inclusive water governance and ensuring women’s participation in decision-making processes.

He noted that the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply Sanitation and Hygiene Program has significantly improved access to clean water and sanitation for over 30,000 people across the state.

He added that additional initiatives, including Operation TSAFTA and the Pad the Girl programme, have enhanced sanitation services, created jobs, and supported menstrual hygiene for thousands of female students.

While acknowledging the progress made, Aliyu pointed out that challenges such as funding constraints, infrastructure maintenance, and climate change remain.

He said the government is addressing these through community-led water management systems, strengthened partnerships, and innovative financing strategies.

He called on residents to support government efforts by paying water bills promptly, safeguarding water infrastructure, and reporting leaks or damages to authorities.

Aliyu concluded that equitable access to water is not only essential for survival but also a powerful driver of social inclusion and economic growth.

“Ensuring access to safe and clean water for all,” he said, “remains central to building a healthier, more inclusive, and prosperous Kaduna State.”
