The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has held a peaceful rally in Kano to draw attention to the nation’s security challenges and submitted a letter of demands to the Kano State Government.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff to the Governor Dr Suleiman Sani Wali, who represented Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, said the state government enjoyed a cordial relationship with organised labour, describing the rally as evidence of harmony between government and workers.

He noted that the peaceful and organised nature of the rally demonstrated constructive engagement rather than confrontation, adding that the state government remained committed to positive dialogue with labour unions.

The Chief of Staff assured the NLC that security issues were being taken seriously in the state, saying all security agencies were working within their capacities to sustain the prevailing peace in Kano.

He said the governor would study the letter presented by the NLC and ensure that its contents were forwarded to the appropriate authorities, including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Earlier, a representative of the NLC President, Mr. Muttaqa Yusha’u, said the rally was in line with a resolution of the NLC National Executive Council to organise peaceful rallies nationwide to raise awareness about insecurity and promote peaceful coexistence.

Yusha’u stressed that insecurity affected workers across all sectors, including teachers, health workers, farmers, traders and security personnel, noting that development could not thrive without safety and peace.

He called for a more coordinated approach involving federal, state and local governments, as well as community leaders and workers’ organisations, to effectively address security challenges.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the NLC in Kano State, Mr. Kabiru Inuwa, commended the Kano State Government for maintaining relative peace in the state but urged sustained efforts to prevent the spread of insecurity from other parts of the country.

Inuwa emphasised the need for improved welfare and support for security personnel and their families, describing collaboration between governments and labour as the most viable path to lasting security.

The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting any government that prioritises workers’ welfare, peace and socio-economic development
