Russia and Nigeria have commemorated the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, with both countries exchanging congratulatory messages that underscored decades of cooperation and a shared commitment to deepen bilateral ties.
In a message from Moscow on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov extended warm congratulations to Nigeria, describing the relationship between both nations as one built on mutual respect and aligned positions on key global issues.
“We note with satisfaction the high level of cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is based on the principles of mutual respect, trust and the closeness of our positions across a broad range of regional and international issues,” Lavrov said.
He added that Russia remains committed to maintaining “active and substantive political dialogue” and expanding collaboration in trade, economic development and humanitarian fields.
“This is in the interest of the peoples of our countries and in support of sustainable peace and development on the African continent,” he stated.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in his response, celebrated the milestone and reaffirmed Nigeria’s desire for a more robust partnership with Russia.
“Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to strengthening partnership in a manner that advances the prosperity of our peoples and contributes to a more just and equitable international order,” Tuggar said.
Reflecting on ties that date back to 25 November 1960, Tuggar noted that both countries have enjoyed constructive relations spanning defence, education, energy, science and technology, space research, trade, and cultural exchange.
“I look forward to deepening collaboration in the economy, security and increased people-to-people exchanges,” the foreign minister added, expressing optimism for the next phase of the bilateral relationship.
Both countries restated their intention to build on decades of cooperation as they celebrate the historic anniversary.
