The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), in collaboration with Rotary International, has organised a large sensitisation rally in Gombe State to raise public awareness and encourage participation in the ongoing Measles, Rubella, and Polio vaccination campaign.

The rally, which commenced from the Emir’s Palace and proceeded through the major streets of Gombe metropolis, drew health workers, community leaders, youth groups, and volunteers.

During the rally Participants carried banners and placards highlighting the importance of immunisation.

In an address, Alhaji Sani Haruna, Chairman of Gombe Local Government Council and ALGON Chairman for Gombe State, said the rally aimed to sensitise the public on the importance of receiving vaccines.

He commended Rotary International and all development partners involved in the fight against preventable diseases, urging stakeholders in Gombe to work together to eradicate polio and other vaccine preventable illnesses.

Alhaji Haruna also pledged the Gombe Local Government’s commitment and active involvement in the campaign, calling on community and religious leaders to mobilise children eligible for vaccination.

Speaking at the event, the representative of Rotary International in Gombe, Mohammed Ndus, expressed support for the campaign and encouraged continued collaboration with local authorities and communities.

He explained that the event was a joint initiative between the Gombe State Government and Rotary International to commemorate World Polio Day on 24 October, aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases and the importance of vaccination.

Our correspondent reports that several vaccines were administered during the campaign, including the measles-rubella vaccine for children aged nine months to 14 years, the novel oral polio vaccine (NOPV) for children aged 0–59 months, and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for nine-year-old girls.
