Nasarawa State Government says it is taking proactive steps to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices in the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resource Dr. Magret Etaki Elayo stated this while addressing Newsmen in Lafia, the state capital.
The Commissioner for Environment explained that, the ministry would continue to strengthening its collaboration with the miners, traditional institutions, and host communities to ensure that mining activities are conducted in line with approved environmental standards.
According to her, the ministry will soon commence a state-wide environmental inspection and monitoring exercise across all mining sites with a view to
guide operators and ensure compliance with best environmental practices.
Dr. Magret Etaki Elayo maintained that government recognizes the growing environmental challenges arising from unregulated mining activities including erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and the loss of farmlands.
She urged miners and community leaders to cooperate with government teams, adopt eco-friendly methods, and contribute to the restoration of degraded lands and protection of water sources.
The commissioner said government had observed increasing environmental challenges linked to unregulated and unsafe mining operations, adding that the initiative have been designed not to intimidate any one in the course of their duty.
