Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH, has recorded a significant milestone in assisted reproductive health services with the successful retrieval of eggs from two patients as part of its in-vitro fertilisation, IVF.

The Chief Consultant Gynaecologist and IVF Specialist at AKTH, Dr Ibrahim Rais, disclosed this in Kano.

Rais said eggs were successfully retrieved from two women, while semen samples were collected from their husbands as part of the next stage of the IVF procedure.

“We have collected eggs from two and we have collected semen samples from their husbands. The eggs collected will be fertilised with their husbands’ sperm,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the procedure would result in successful pregnancies for the patients.

According to him, the hospital planned to continue the procedure with three additional patients the following day, while another patient was scheduled for treatment.

The successful egg retrieval represents a significant step in AKTH’s efforts to expand advanced fertility treatment services and improve access to assisted reproductive technology for couples experiencing fertility challenges in Kano and neighbouring communities.

The hospital said the procedure was achieved through the collaborative efforts of its medical personnel, reproductive health specialists from Jos and Abuja, and two embryologists.

AKTH said the development would further strengthen its capacity to provide IVF and other assisted reproductive technology services.

The hospital described the achievement as an important milestone in expanding specialised fertility care in the region and bringing advanced reproductive health services closer to residents.

It commended its staff and the specialists involved in the procedure, describing the achievement as a demonstration of its commitment to healthcare excellence and the provision of specialised medical services.
