Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has called on the state government to establish a Community College of Midwifery in Kiru Local Government Area as part of efforts to improve maternal healthcare and reduce unemployment.
This was sequel to deliberations during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
Leading the motion, the member representing Kiru constituency, Alhaji Usman Tasiu, argued that the establishment of a midwifery college would significantly reduce maternal mortality rates in the state.
He stressed that the institution would not only strengthen the primary healthcare system but also provide employment opportunities for youths in the area.
Supporting the motion, the member representing Takai, Dr. Musa Ali Kachako, highlighted that the proposed college would enhance health education and attract more development partners to the state.
After thorough deliberation, the House unanimously adopted the motion and urged the Kano State Government to establish the college in Kiru LGA.
In a related development, the lawmakers also urged the state government to urgently renovate the Government Technical College in Dambatta.
The motion was moved by Murtala Musa Kore supported by the lawmakers.
The Dambatta lawmaker decried the dilapidated condition of the institution and emphasized the urgent need to revamp the technical education sector.
Seconding the motion, the member representing Doguwa, Salisu Ibrahim Muhammad, called on the state government to review and modernize the technical education curriculum to align with global standards.
Meanwhile, the House also adopted a motion by Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu, member representing Gabasawa, concerning the recent flooding In Zakirai Ward.
He explained that an ongoing 5-kilometer road construction project in the area had obstructed natural waterways, resulting in serious flooding that affected several households.
Zakariyya warned that the forced breaking of wells and soakaways to channel water flow poses a significant health risk, including the contamination of drinking water with faecal matter.
The House called on relevant government agencies to address the situation urgently to avert a potential public health crisis.
The house adjourned its sitting to Monday 28th July 2025 in a motion moved by the majority leader Lawan Hussaini Dala.
