Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago has banned commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, and tricycles, otherwise known as keke, from operating from 6 pm to 6 am daily.
The call became imperative due to the rising cases of insecurity in some parts of the state.
The governor made the declaration during a high-level stakeholders’ security meeting held at the Government House, Minna.
Governor Bago said the ban became necessary to address the worsening security challenges in the state, particularly in Minna.
According to him, the ban is temporary but has exceptions for medical emergencies.
Governor Bago maintained that any form of irresponsibility would not be tolerated, stressing that he would not fold my arms and watch criminals continue to wreak havoc
He noted that it was the fundamental responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of its citizens, and as such, it must do everything within the ambit of the law to protect them.
He ordered district, village, and ward heads to ensure proper documentation of all residents within their communities, noting that any house found to be accommodating criminals will be demolished.
