Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC Women Committee has stressed the need for women to learn a skill in order to assist their husbands and be self reliant.

The Chairperson of the Women Committee Kaduna State Chapter, Comrade Martha Banki made the call at this year’s International Women’s Day celebration organized by the committee with the theme Accelerate Action, for all women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment held in Kaduna.

 

 

Comrade Martha Banki urged women to take steps toward empowering themselves, their families, and society at large for socio-economic development.

“This year’s theme, accelerate action for women and girls, rights equality and Empowerment as we put it resonate deeply with our mission, we believe that women empowerment is essential for the development of our society and honestly we appreciate the state government also in making sure that the girls are not left behind in Kaduna State and making every effort possible to make sure that our rights are not been tempered with”, she said.

Delivering a keynote address, Professor Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf of the Department of Criminology and Gender Studies, Kaduna State University, shared her personal journey to financial independence, attributing her success to hard work and dedication.

She encouraged women to avoid complacency, stressing that no woman should be lazy with the present development of the society.

 

 

In a remark
Governor of the NLC Women Committee Skills Acquisition Programme, Comrade Murna Zuwai Musa lauded the initiative and the support extended to women in the state.

She noted that, given current economic realities, no woman should depend solely on her husband for survival.

Also speaking, Comrade Jaiyeola Olatunji  shared her personal gains from the training, expressing hope that all participants would replicate the knowledge and skills in their various unions, in line with the NLC’s practice of peer learning.

Delivering goodwill messages, Comrades Opara Joachim, Michael Toyin, Tina Smart, and Barrister Julie Ariahu applauded the NLC Women Committee for organizing the impactful International Women’s Day event and called for its continuity and expansion.

This year’s International Women’s Day, officially observed on March 8, witnessed extended celebrations by women’s groups and organizations throughout the months of March and April.
