Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission Mr. Tony Ojukwu

The National Human Rights Commission has adopted a community-based approach that will promote reconciliation of persons affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission Mr Tony Ojukwu made this known during at a two-day training of community stakeholders and transitional justice and reconciliation committee for the three most affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states in Maiduguri.

Mr. Ojukwu noted that the training is aimed at institutionalising transitional justice mechanism at the community level that will translate to lasting peace, reconciliation and development in post conflict communities.

He explained that the transitional justice panels are expected to adjudicate cases using right-base approaches, establish a complaints registry and determine appropriate compensation for victims.

The Executive Secretary also said the reconciliation committees will provide opportunity for truth telling between the victims and also reconcile victims and perpetrators.

“It is important to note that the Transitional Justice Panels and the Community Reconciliation Committees are two important community-led mechanisms which the National Human Rights Commission conceived as platforms for the attainment of the twin outcomes ” Mr Ojukwu said.

The Secretary Bama Emirate Council Alhaji Makinta Usman thanked the National Human Rights Commission for the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to rebuild trust in resettled communities.

He called on Government to prosecute any person found culpable in the violence of Boko Haram insurgency.
