Kano state house of assembly has reaffirmed its dedication to expedite action on constitutional amendment.

The speaker of the assembly Engineer Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari made the indication at a two day session on the review of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, organized by PERL (ECP) in Kano

According to him, 42 clauses were transmitted to KNHA by the national assembly, which necessitated the establishment of a committee under the leadership of the deputy speaker to study and report back its findings and recommendations for consideration and final voting.

Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari noted that a public hearing would be organized on local governments autonomy, to ensure that it is in line with yearnings and aspirations of the people.

“As legislators I wish to reiterate our commitments and resolve in taking the right decisions while considering the alterations for concurrence with the national assembly”

Also speaking, majority leader of the house Alhaji Labaran Abdul Madari explained that, twenty four out of thirty six states in the country were needed to assent to the 42 clauses before it is passed into law.

He said PERL organized the workshop to enable them go through the clauses, understand and take the necessary action on the floor of the house.

On the speedy consideration of the 42 clauses, the chairman house standing committee on constitutional review, who doubles as the deputy speaker Alhaji Kabiru Hassan Dashi said, the two day session is one of the programs adopted by the committee to ensure success of the exercise.

He maintained that opinions from the public hearing would be considered as guide during deliberations on the floor of the house.

Earlier in his remarks, team leader partnership to Engage Reform and learn, Malam Isah Surajo said the workshop would provide a platform for participants to reflect on the fifth alteration bills, with a view to deepening their understanding of the provisions of the bills, principles and purpose.

He stressed that the session would go a long way in building consensus among members around the bills and take informed decision during their consideration.

The two day session themed: “An overview of the 5th constitution Alteration Bills: Rationale and implications for Governance and the socioeconomic development for Nigeria” witnessed large turn out of legislators, development partners, media and the general public.
