The head of legislative service Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Garba Bako Gezawa says the passage of local government autonomy bill into law would enhance socio economic viability of the people and address insecurity.

He made the assertion at a one-day media engagement meeting on the proposed local government administrative and financial autonomy, held in Kano.

The head of legislative service who doubles as the clerk, attributed insecurity to the non functionality of the local government councils across the country.

Alhaji Garba who was represented by Muhammad Lawan Tijjani, reaffirmed Kano state House of Assembly’s readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to achieve the desired objectives.

Earlier in his remarks, the Kano state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists-NUJ, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, challenged the media in massive advocacy for passage of the bill.

He described the union as a pressure group known to have impacts on the life of Nigerians.

Also speaking, a former lecturer with the department of mass communication Bayero University Kano, Dr. Maude Rabi’u Gwadabe tasked journalists on consistency in reporting for effectiveness.

He advised journalists to be cautious in reporting sensitive issues that may generate controversy.

“They should be strategic and consider good timing for their reports”.

In their seperate presentations, Head of Programmes department of a Radio station in Kano, Hajiya Nafisa Murtala Ahmed and Malam Nasiru Yusuf of a Television station, highlighted the key role of all stakeholders on mobilizing, for the successful passage of the bill for the benefit of the people.

In addition to the need for the media to play active role in advocating for the passage of the bill.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that the one-day engagement was supported by Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL).

The project is a five year Programme, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), funded governance program, to support Nigerian states and federal government to develop and implement policies.
