United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime UNODC has handed over the newly upgraded educational, vocational and recreational facilities to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The Project is under phase 1 of Strengthening the Capacity of the Nigerian Correctional Service to effectively rehabilitate and reintegrate prisoners held for an alleged association with Boko Haram.

In an event at Maiduguri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Country Representative of UNODC, Dr Oliver Stolpe says the facilities are upgraded to ensure that the inmates can support themselves and live a law-abiding life upon their release.

He noted that the infrastructural upgrade done with the support of the German government included refurbishment of classroom and provision of standard educational materials, improve access to light and water, upgrading and equipping vocational training workshops as well as sports facilities. 

The UNODC Country representative promised to upgrade more facilities at the remaining Correctional facilities in Borno state.

Responding, the Controller General of Corrections Halliru Nababa represented by Deputy Controller General Health and Welfare Marylaurine Emmanuel thanked the United Nations for the intervention. 

Mr Nababa observed that the vocational and educational facilities would greatly help in the de-radicalisation effort of the federal government. 

Similarly, Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum also represented by the Attorney General and Commidsioner for Justice Kaka Shehu Lawan assured that the state government wouldl continue to support the judiciary to ensure that justice delivery is brought to the doorstep of the common man.
