A bill seeking for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from contributory pension scheme has passed second reading at the House of Representatives.
The bill sponsored by a member from Delta state, Mr Francis Ejiroghene aim at alleviating the difficulties retired police personnel pass through after leaving servive.
He stated that while their pension is meagre compared with other security agencies, the contributory pension is an impediment to their access to benefits.
He, therefore, suggested that, Section 5 (1) of the Pension Reform Act 2014 be amended to remove the NPF personnel from the scheme to enable them enjoy their entitlements after spending many years serving the country.
Contributing to the debate, a member from Kebbi state, Shehu Koko, described the situation of retired police officers in the country as pathetic and appealed to the house to support the bill in the interest of national security.
After a debate, the house referred the bill to its committee on pensions for further legislative considerations.
